Teenage Pregnancy And Child Birth - 850 Words
Teenage pregnancy and child birth have long been a controversy in the united states. The issue emerged during the 1950ââ¬â¢s and early 1960ââ¬â¢s when teenage childbearing rates reached a historical peak. In the mid 1960ââ¬â¢s birth control was introduces and the teen pregnancy rate dropped by 25 percent however it is still a social issue. Such strife has triggered much political debate. Notably, whether the government should fund programs that encourage abstinence or focus on birth control. Although abstinence would be more publicly accepted, it may not be as beneficial as allowing teens to easily access and use contraceptives. Teens are raging with hormones as their bodies are experiencing puberty which at times could result in sexual acts. The aftermath of these sexual acts is pregnancy and birth. Allowing teens to have free access to contraceptives gives one a sense of being safe rather then being sorry. School boards and school nurses should be able to provide teenagers with free contraceptives to lower the teen pregnancy and birth rate as well as increase the number or high school dropouts, lower abortion rates, and improve the economy. Teen child bearing consequences most often fall entirely on the female, in life altering ways. Pregnancy and Birth are significant contributors to the high school dropout rates among teen girls. Only 50% of teen moms receive a diploma by the age 22. Chutzph Dershowitz Essay Example For Students
Chutzph Dershowitz Essay In Alan Dershowitzs novel Chutzpah, he devotes an entire section to the issue of, and his personal feelings about James Pollard. He begins this section with a description of the way in which this man was caught selling classified government documents to the nation of Israel. Basically this man was a Jewish American spy for the Israeli government because of a duty he felt stemming from a secret loyalty he felt toward the nation of Israel. Over an extended period of time this man sold thousand of secret documents which in the eyes of Weinberger, the Secretary of Defense for the United States was a ?serious breech in national security.? Dershowitz emphasizes in great detail how in order to avoid a trial in which the declassification of these documents would be required, Pollard was pressured to accept a plea bargain in which he would plead guilty, give full disclosure pertaining to the information he handed over, and release all rights to any of his future published material that pertained to the case. In exchange for these things he would be granted a formal request by the US government to the judge of the case which would call for a restricted sentence for him and his wife. Pollard agreed to this deal and was satisfied with it until he received a sentence of life in a maximum security prison and his wife received 5 years in prison. The evidence that Dershowitz presents suggests that Pollard did get an unfair deal, and a much harsher sentence than others in the past have received for similar crimes. Dershowitz stated in no uncertain terms that in his opinion the reason for for this discrepancy in the sentencing process has to do with the fact that Pollard is a Jewish man who betrayed America for Israel. He states: I am convinced that if Pollard were a non-Jew who had spied for a non-Jewish country, he would not be in prison today.? Dershowitz finds fault in the way Pollard?s lawyers handled the case. He claims that if Pollard had used his constitutional right to remain silent that the government would have been hard pressed to to make a case against him because it would have required declassification of highly sensitive intelligence documents. His choice to accept the plea bargain and submit himself to the mercy of the government was in Dershowitz?s eyes a terrible mistake and a partial reason for imprisonment. There is no doubt that in Dershowitz?s eyes that this case is an issue of race and not so much an issue of foul play. He reiterates over and over that Pollard?s actions were not in conflict with American national security and that Israel was some how entitled to the documents because in many ways they pertained to Israeli national security. Dershowitz does his best to downplay Pollard?s acts of treason and at the same hammers home his point that Pollard is being unfairly held. He repeatedly emphasizes that Israel is an American ally, and that Pollard could have easily commanded much greater sums of money than he received from Israel if he had sold the information to more hostile nations. His description of the situation lacks legal substance, and tends to suggest a theory of widespread anti Semitism. Dershowitz makes a convincing argument that Pollard received a sentence that was inconsistent both with past cases as well as what he was actually promised in return for his guilty plea. It does seem that if Pollard had fought to the end that his worst case scenario would not be much different from what he got out of the plea bargain. Dershowitz blames poor legal advice and failure for the government to hold up its end of the deal for Pollard?s present situation. It is not exactly clear to the general public exactly what information Pollard turned over to the Israelis. All of these documents are still classified and it is likely that they will be for many years to come. .ub77e5b874ab95b0517da89b72666d73c , .ub77e5b874ab95b0517da89b72666d73c .postImageUrl , .ub77e5b874ab95b0517da89b72666d73c .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ub77e5b874ab95b0517da89b72666d73c , .ub77e5b874ab95b0517da89b72666d73c:hover , .ub77e5b874ab95b0517da89b72666d73c:visited , .ub77e5b874ab95b0517da89b72666d73c:active { border:0!important; } .ub77e5b874ab95b0517da89b72666d73c .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ub77e5b874ab95b0517da89b72666d73c { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ub77e5b874ab95b0517da89b72666d73c:active , .ub77e5b874ab95b0517da89b72666d73c:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ub77e5b874ab95b0517da89b72666d73c .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ub77e5b874ab95b0517da89b72666d73c .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ub77e5b874ab95b0517da89b72666d73c .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ub77e5b874ab95b0517da89b72666d73c .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ub77e5b874ab95b0517da89b72666d73c:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ub77e5b874ab95b0517da89b72666d73c .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ub77e5b874ab95b0517da89b72666d73c .ub77e5b874ab95b0517da89b72666d73c-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ub77e5b874ab95b0517da89b72666d73c:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Lung Cancer Essay Summary However, the fact is that this man had an extremely high security clearance and that he broke a sworn oath to protect the interests of the American people. This is a very serious crime, and in my opinion should not be diluted with charges of anti Semitism. It is likely that Pollard received less than a square deal from the US government in regards to his sentence. It is also likely that an example is being made of his mistake and its consequences. It has been suggested that if Pollard were released he could move to Israel at which time he would receive a hero?s welcome and a new life of wealth and prestige. This is something that a majority of Americans would find disheartening at best. In this section of his book, Dershowitz is pleading for the Jewish community to pull together on Pollard?s behalf. He goes on to give a very persuasive argument as to why Jewish leaders should not fear being accused of having dual national loyalty. Pollards ultimate fate is still not clear, but he is presently in prison and will most likely be there for the duration of his sentence. However, Dershowitz has pledged to fight on his behalf until he is released.

One More River Essays - Lesley, , Term Papers
One More River Can you imagine having to leave everything you have ever known to live in a country on the verge of war? Lesley Shelby, the main character in One More River by Lynn Reid Banks, knows exactly how it feels. This Jewish Canadian girl has to emigrate to Israel with her family. Through the determination and courage of one person we see how challenges, complications, and differences of the world are overcome. In the story the most important character is Lesley. Lesley is a spoiled, pretty, Jewish, fourteen year old living in Canada. As the story progresses we see Lesley change to a caring and mature person by overcoming the differences in her new life. Two other important characters are Nat Shelby and Mustapha. Lesleys father, Nat Shelby is the person who decided the family needed to live in Israel. Mr. Shelby decides he doesnt want his daughter growing up as a spoiled uncaring princess. Mustapha, other important character, is an Arab boy who Lesley watches abuse his donkey across the Jordan River. All the Jews are not supposed to hate Arabs, but Lesley however comes in contact with Mustapha by the river and talks to him as a person not as an enemy. Mustapha made Lesley a more understanding person towards different kinds of people. The character I would most admire is Lesley for her ability to adapt to a new home, country and way of life. Throughout the book there were many turning points. The war made Lesley really feel a part of Israel and the people. Another turning point was when Lesley was allowed to join the poola because she was finally excepted as one of them. The most important turning point is when Lesley, at the end of the book, takes the picture Mustapha threw at her and wrote a peace between us and between our peoples in three languages and stuck it in the wall in Jerusalem. The major conflict in this story was moving to Israel because Lesley threw fits until she secretly visited Noah. (Lesleys brother who was disowned because he married a catholic girl.) He told her to go and thats when the conflict stopped. The plot enabled the characters to change. Lesley became excepting of life and the Arabs through events in the plot. In 1966 the Shelbys lived in Canada and then moved to a center in Israel were they had to learn Hebrew. From the center they moved to a Kibbutz. Lesley is not excepting of everything until she decides to become one of them. After she understands the culture she begins to love it there and it becomes her home. The plot needs the setting changes to keep interest and to allow character growth. The author uses a lot of imagery and symbolism throughout the book. Whether shes describing the land or a dress, you can almost picture what it looks like. Lesley clutched at rough stems of plants as she half climbed, half slid down. You are able o see Lesley trying to get down the riverbank. An example of symbolism would be the river. The river is a symbol of stupidity of the two countries. They could get along if they would just set aside differences, have courage, and cross over to peace. Some of the patterns that contribute to the over-all theme are people forgetting about differences and having the courage to accept one another. Lesley realizes this after meeting Mustapha. Lesleys parents also realize this when Noah comes back. The most important lesson in the story was you could overcome anything if you have determination and courage. By the end of the story Lesley proved to have matured greatly and to except life in Israel. The story One More River taught us how to overcome challenges, complications, and differences of the world with determination and courage.

Are You Up on the Top Resume Cover Letter Trends of 2012-2013
Are You Up on the Top Resume Cover Letter Trends of 2012-2013 Are you up on the top resume cover letter trends of 2012-2013? Many articles posted on line are old and outdated. Thankfully, each year Career Thought Leaders releases an up-to-date report on current job search trends and the 2012 report has been released! Findings of 2012 Global Career Brainstorming Day: Trends for the Now, the New the Next in Careers covers topics including Career Marketing Communications (my focus), Job Search, Career Planning Management, Career Counseling Coaching, The Changing Employment Landscape, and Challenges for Career Professionals. I invite you to read the full report to get a picture of job search trends in all these areas. What follows is a summary of top trends in Resumes Cover Letters, LinkedIn Profiles and Video/Multimedia presentations. The Essay Expert will be following these recommendations and I hope you will too! Resumes Cover Letters Resumes are not dead, despite the fact that some people do get interview offers based solely on their social media profiles and video presentations. In most fields, resumes remain the central career marketing document, around which all other materials (LinkedIn profile, networking resume, bio, etc.) revolve. Ideal length is two pages for most mid- to senior-level professionals; the presentation must be such that the information is readily absorbed in 6-10 seconds. A portfolio of additional, consistently branded materials, including an Executive Summary for senior players, is welcomed by decision-makers; this compilation paints a full picture of what an accomplished applicant offers. An exact street address is no longer necessary, but a LinkedIn URL is recommended. Numbers speak louder than words, so include any you can! Also include CAR (Challenge-Action-Result) or STAR (Situation-Task-Action-Result) stories to demonstrate your value. Each resume must be tailored to the job description. You will need multiple versions to be truly effective. Quotes/testimonials are becoming more and more accepted- and perhaps even expected- on resumes. Photos are still a no-no in the United States for anyone looking for full-time employment; in Europe and the UK, however, photos remain standard. Document Format requirements vary depending on your audience. Some organizations and job search sites accept fully formatted resumes in .doc or .pdf format; others require Word documents or text-based files. Gmail addresses are the standard, and aol addresses are seen as antiquated, especially for tech jobs. Brief, tailored cover letters are still welcome by some HR and hiring managers, so best practice is to include one that makes you stand out. The old ââ¬Å"snail mailâ⬠tradition of sending a resume on nice bond paper is also not dead! You can make an impression by doing so and get some attention. If you are working with a recruiter, do whatever the recruiter directs you to do. You can use your more highly formatted resume when interacting directly with hiring managers. LinkedIn LinkedIn is absolutely essential to your job search strategy. Sure, you can be on facebook, Twitter and Pinterest, but LinkedIn is the one non-negotiable. Did you know that recruiters will often accept LinkedIn connection requests even though they will not read an unsolicited resume? Once on LinkedIn, recommendations are as follows: Prioritize keywords and recommendations (vs. endorsements). Update your profile and activity status regularly. There is no need to purchase a Premium account in order to get value from your LinkedIn presence. LinkedIn is not a silver bullet! Simply having a great profile does not guarantee success; you must participate in discussions and ââ¬Å"take it off lineâ⬠to get full value from the site. Your LinkedIn profile should complement, not copy, your resume. VideoBios, Web Portfolios, Visual CVs Other Multimedia Tools Web portfolios are becoming common, especially for those in the graphic arts field. A web presence may soon be expected for job seekers in some fields! Consistent branding is key. Video resumes are more accepted and utilized on the West Coast than elsewhere, but they have not taken off as anticipated. It seems social media profiles such as LinkedIn are still winning out. Some recruiters like video resumes/bios and Skype. Word to the wise: If you choose to present yourself through video, make sure you use high level technology! A poor quality video image, whether in a video or a Skype conversation, can be worse than no video at all. I hope the above ââ¬Å"hot-off-the-pressâ⬠advice from top career professionals supports what youââ¬â¢re already doing or encourages you to head in a new direction. Read the full report here. In this case, it was his music that drove him however, there are points in the movie that display his fierce competitions and aim for perfection applied to so many parts of his life it is difficult to distinguish that music was his primary drive after all. The plot of this movie is far deeper than simply telling the history or life story of Amadeus. Rather it shows the man he was and his eccentric nature and his gift for music. The characters in the film are adorned in lavish costumes that seem almost outlandish at times.
